How to Revive Dried Live Moss (and Keep It Green)

One of the most common messages we get is some version of: "My moss arrived and it looks dry. Is it dead?" Almost always, the answer is no. Moss is remarkable: it can dry out, go dormant, and come back to life when it gets water again. Shipping it dormant is what keeps it healthy in transit.

Why live moss arrives dry

Moss has no true roots. It absorbs water directly through its leaves and can survive long dry periods by shutting down. A dormant moss is lighter, travels better and resists mould in the box. Once it is rehydrated, it starts photosynthesizing again.

How to revive it in three steps

  1. Rehydrate. Soak the moss in clean, non-chlorinated water for 10 to 20 minutes, or mist it thoroughly.
  2. Set it in place. Let it drain, then place it where it will live: a terrarium, a planter, or a shaded, humid spot with indirect light.
  3. Keep it moist. Mist regularly so it stays soft and springy. Most moss greens up noticeably within days to a couple of weeks.

What not to do

  • Do not use chlorinated or very hard tap water if you can avoid it. Rainwater or distilled water is best.
  • Do not put moss in direct, hot sun. It will dry out and bleach.
  • Do not leave it sitting in a puddle. Moss likes damp, not soggy.
  • Do not fertilize it. Moss does not need it.

Is my moss dead?

Dormant moss looks dry and dull but springs back when wet. Moss that stays brown and crumbly after a week of consistent moisture and light may not recover. If you are ever unsure about an order, contact our team. We are happy to help.
