How to Propagate Plants in Sphagnum Moss
If you have ever rooted a cutting in a glass of water and then watched it struggle after potting, sphagnum moss is the upgrade you have been looking for. It holds moisture and air at the same time, which is exactly what new roots need, and the roots it produces adapt to soil far more easily than water roots.
Why sphagnum moss works so well
- Holds moisture: our Premium Long Fiber Sphagnum Moss retains up to 20 times its weight in water.
- Stays airy: long fibres (3" to 6") leave space for oxygen, which helps prevent rot.
- Naturally acidic and slow to break down: a clean, stable rooting environment.
- Easy transition: roots grown in moss are sturdier than water roots.
What you will need
- Long fiber sphagnum moss
- Clean, sharp shears
- Clear cups or a container with a lid or a clear bag
- Healthy cuttings, each with at least one node

Step-by-step
- Rehydrate the moss. Soak it in water for 10 to 15 minutes, then squeeze it out until it is damp but not dripping.
- Take your cutting. Cut just below a node. For monstera and philodendron, a node with an aerial root roots fastest.
- Pack the moss loosely. Fill a clear cup with damp moss and nestle the node into it. Do not pack it tight; roots need air.
- Add humidity. Cover loosely with a clear bag or lid, or place cups in a container, and keep them in bright, indirect light.
- Check moisture weekly. Mist when the surface starts to feel dry. Air out the container occasionally to prevent mould.
- Pot it up. When roots are a few inches long, move the cutting to a chunky, well-draining mix like Sol Soils Houseplant Chunky Mix.
