How to Grow Moss on Rocks, Pavers and Stone
There is something magical about stone covered in moss. It makes a garden look old, calm and established. The good news: you do not have to wait decades for nature to do it. With moss fragments and a little patience, you can grow real moss on rocks, flagstone, pavers, walls and garden ornaments.
What you will need
- Mossify Growable Moss: a blend of real dried moss fragments (Dicranum and Pleurozium) that establishes when given moisture and surface contact. One 130 g bag covers about 15 sq ft.
- A spray bottle, mister or hose with a fine spray.
- A shaded or filtered-light spot.
Step 1: Pick the right spot
Moss establishes best in shade or filtered light. Avoid intense afternoon sun, especially while it is getting started. North-facing stone, the base of walls and areas under trees are ideal.
Step 2: Prepare the surface
Clean off loose dirt, algae and debris. Rough, porous surfaces such as natural stone, concrete and brick hold fragments better than smooth ones. Moss prefers slightly acidic conditions, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.5.
Step 3: Apply the fragments
Moisten the surface first. Sprinkle fragments evenly and press them gently into joints, cracks and crevices so they make good contact. Between pavers, work fragments down into the gaps.

Step 4: Keep it consistently moist
This is the most important step. Mist the area regularly so the fragments never dry out during establishment, especially in warm or windy weather. Consistent moisture and humidity are what turn fragments into living moss.
Step 5: Be patient
You will usually see green growth in the first weeks and months; full maturity takes roughly 6 to 12 months or more, depending on conditions. Spring and fall are the best seasons to start outdoors.

Does the buttermilk moss trick work?
Blending moss with buttermilk or yogurt is a popular hack, but results vary. Consistent moisture and good surface contact matter far more.
Will moss grow in full sun?
Moss establishes best in shade or filtered light. Harsh afternoon sun dries fragments before they can establish.
Can I grow moss indoors on rocks?
Yes. Terrariums and humid containers are the easiest place to grow moss on stone indoors.
