Growable Moss: Boreal Mix & Sphagnum Mix
✅ Yes, you can grow real moss from moss fragments, just add water! 🌱
Mossify Growable Moss is a blend of real dried moss fragments designed to gradually establish and grow when provided with the right combination of consistent moisture, humidity, surface contact and filtered light.
Our newly improved Growable Moss line is available in two formulas: Boreal Mix and Sphagnum Mix. Both are designed to make growing moss approachable for beginners while offering a natural way to add living greenery to stone, soil, wood, terrariums, gardens and more.
🌲 Boreal Mix is our versatile, forest-inspired formula and the best all-around option for creating a classic moss-covered look. Its blend includes Dicranum scoparium and Pleurozium schreberi, along with sphagnum, providing a naturally varied forest-floor texture. It is especially well suited for flagstone, stone, soil, wood, moss gardens, terrariums, moss walls and other shaded projects.
💧 Sphagnum Mix is based on a similar moss blend but is enriched with additional sphagnum, giving it greater moisture-retaining properties. It is especially well suited for environments where consistent moisture and higher humidity are important, including terrariums, paludariums, bog gardens, carnivorous plant setups and humid naturalistic habitats.
If you're looking for the most versatile option, Boreal Mix is a great place to start. If your project benefits from additional moisture retention or naturally stays very humid, Sphagnum Mix is likely the better fit.
Unlike preserved moss or an instant moss mat, Growable Moss is a living project. Moss naturally develops slowly, so patience, moisture and consistency are key to helping the fragments successfully establish.
How to Apply:
There are two easy ways to apply your Growable Moss:
Dry Application
-
Clear your desired area of weeds, leaves, loose dirt and debris.
-
Thoroughly pre-mist or dampen the surface before applying the moss. This helps the fragments stay in place and maintain better contact with the growing surface.
-
Sprinkle the dried moss fragments evenly across the damp surface.
-
Gently press the fragments into place when possible.
-
Mist thoroughly using a gentle spray.
-
Continue keeping the area consistently moist, especially during the first several weeks.
Wet Application
-
Place the moss fragments into a clean container or bucket.
-
Slowly add water while gently mixing until the fragments form a light, spreadable slurry. There is no need to completely submerge them.
-
Apply the mixture evenly over your prepared surface.
-
Gently spread or press the fragments into place.
-
Mist the area and begin maintaining consistent moisture immediately.
Growable Moss can be applied to a wide variety of suitable surfaces, including soil, stone, flagstone, wood, terrarium substrates and more.
The most important part is what happens after application: keep the moss consistently moist while it establishes.

Growable Moss Care:
Light Requirements: Shade or bright, filtered/indirect light is ideal. Avoid intense direct afternoon sun, particularly while the moss is establishing.
Watering: Keep the fragments and growing surface consistently moist during establishment.
First 1–4 Weeks: Check the moss regularly and mist whenever necessary to prevent it from repeatedly drying out.
Months 2–6: Continue maintaining moisture and humidity as the moss begins establishing, thickening and attaching more firmly to the surface.
Full Development: Mature moss coverage can take approximately 6–12 months or longer, depending on growing conditions.
Humidity: Higher humidity generally helps create a more favourable environment for moss establishment.
Surface: Begin with a clean, damp surface free of weeds, leaves and debris.
Soil / Surface pH: Slightly acidic conditions are preferred, approximately pH 4.5–6.5.
Outdoor Use: For outdoor projects, beginning in spring or fall generally makes maintaining favourable moisture and temperature conditions easier.
During the first several weeks, consistent moisture is more important than following an exact watering schedule. A dry outdoor environment may require frequent misting, while a humid terrarium may retain moisture for much longer.
The goal is simple: keep the moss moist without washing the fragments away.
Important Notes:
- Moss is naturally slow-growing, so visible results should be expected over weeks and months rather than days.
- Growth rates and final coverage vary depending on humidity, temperature, light, watering, surface conditions and ongoing care.
- Heavy rain or strong streams of water may wash loose fragments away before they become established.
- Avoid allowing the growing area to repeatedly dry out during the early establishment period.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to hot, direct afternoon sunlight.
- Some areas may establish faster than others. Uneven early growth is completely normal.
- Moss may change colour depending on hydration and growing conditions.
- Once opened, we do not offer refunds or exchanges.
- Because this is a living natural product, successful establishment cannot be guaranteed.
Please make sure the selected growing area remains consistently watered and moist, especially during the first few weeks following application. We highly recommend pre-misting the surface before applying the fragments, as this improves contact and helps keep them from moving.
Whether you're filling flagstone joints, creating a moss garden, building a terrarium, covering soil or stone, designing a moss wall or creating a naturalistic habitat, Growable Moss gives you a simple way to start growing the real thing.
Just add water, stay consistent, and let nature take it from there. 🌱
