Moss Pole vs. Coir Pole: Which Should You Choose?
If you have a climbing houseplant, you have probably wondered whether to give it a moss pole or a coir pole. Both work, both look great, and both are better than leaving a vining plant to sprawl. The right choice depends on your plant, how much you want to mist, and the look you are after.
What is a moss pole?
A moss pole has an outer layer of moss that holds moisture. Our Original Bendable Moss Pole™ uses a premium sphagnum and forest moss blend over a burlap inner layer and a galvanized steel frame. When the moss stays damp, aerial roots grow into it, which encourages many aroids to produce larger, more mature leaves.

What is a coir pole?
A coir pole is wrapped in coconut fibre. It is lighter, slimmer and drier than moss, and it needs very little upkeep. The Original Bendable Coir Pole™ is just 0.6 inches thick, wrapped in premium Manila coir and comes with reusable plant tape.
Side-by-side
| Moss pole | Coir pole | |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture | Holds water; mist to keep damp | Stays mostly dry |
| Aerial root grip | Excellent when damp | Good for stems and lighter roots |
| Upkeep | Regular misting | Very low |
| Look | Natural, mossy, lush | Clean, slim, minimal |
| Best for | Monstera, philodendron, aroids that love humidity | Pothos, hoya, scindapsus, smaller climbers |
Choose a moss pole if…
- You grow monsteras or philodendrons and want bigger, more mature leaves.
- You do not mind misting a few times a week.
- You want the most natural, lush look.
Choose a coir pole if…
- You want a low-maintenance support with no misting.
- Your plant is a lighter climber like pothos or hoya.
- You prefer a slim, minimal look in a smaller pot.

What about thin moss poles?
Somewhere in between is the Bendable Moss Pole™ THIN: the moss texture and moisture of a moss pole at 0.9 inches thick. It is ideal for smaller or more intricate plants and for tight spaces.
Why bendable matters
Whichever material you choose, a bendable pole lets you shape the support to the plant instead of forcing the plant to a straight stick. Curve it toward the light, follow an existing stem or create a sculptural shape. Read why bendable poles beat regular poles.

Shop moss & coir polesFrequently asked questions
Is a moss pole or coir pole better for a monstera?
A moss pole, kept damp, gives monstera aerial roots the best grip and moisture, which encourages larger, more fenestrated leaves.
Do coir poles need to be misted?
No. Coir poles work well dry, which is why they are popular for low-maintenance setups.
Can I switch from a coir pole to a moss pole later?
Yes. When you repot, move the plant to a moss pole and attach the nodes against the moss.
