How to Use a Grow Light for Houseplants (Distance, Hours and Placement)

Light is the single biggest factor in how well a houseplant grows. When a plant does not get enough, it stretches toward the window, produces small leaves and grows "leggy." A good LED grow light fixes that, even in a room with no window at all. Here is how to use one properly.

Signs your plant needs more light

  • Long gaps between leaves (leggy growth)
  • Small new leaves, or monstera leaves without splits
  • Variegated plants losing their colour
  • Leaning hard toward a window

More on this in how to fix a leggy plant.

How far should the light be from the plant?

For most small LED grow lights, 6 to 12 inches above the top leaves is a good starting point. Closer gives more intensity; further spreads the light more evenly. Our Adjustable LED Plant Light extends from 8" to 28", so you can raise it as your plant grows.

How many hours a day?

Most houseplants do well with 10 to 14 hours of light a day. Plants also need darkness, so do not leave a grow light on 24/7. A built-in timer, like the one on our LED Plant Light, keeps the schedule consistent without you thinking about it.

What about brightness?

Start at a medium setting. If leaves start to bleach or crisp, lower the brightness or raise the light. If growth stays leggy, increase brightness or move the light closer.

Pair your light with a pole

Climbing plants grow up toward the light. Combining a grow light with a Bendable Moss Pole™ lets you guide the plant upward and keep new growth compact and full. You can even bend the pole toward the light source.

Frequently asked questions

Can a grow light replace sunlight completely?

For most houseplants, yes. A full-spectrum LED on a consistent schedule can keep plants healthy in rooms without windows.

Do grow lights use a lot of electricity?

LED grow lights are energy-efficient and use far less power than older bulb types.

Why are my leaves turning pale under a grow light?

The light may be too strong or too close. Lower the brightness or raise the light.
