How Tall Should Your Moss Pole be?

Purchasing a moss pole is a big deal! 

It's exciting and feels amazing to give your plants exactly what they’ve been begging you for! 

A common question we receive about moss poles is: How tall should it be? 

So, what size moss pole should you be using for your favourite plant? 

It may seem daunting, but choosing the correct size for your plant is not as complicated as you think. 

To ease this process, we’ve put together a guide for choosing the correct size moss pole! 

Let’s break it down! 

There are 3 main factors to consider when choosing a moss pole: 

1. Type of plant
2. Size of plant
3. Style of space

Every plant has different growing patterns, requirements and needs, all of which should be researched prior to buying a moss pole, so you can make the best decision for your plant.

Speed of Growth 

When choosing the correct size moss pole, you’ll want to consider how fast your plant grows. 

You don’t want to support a fast growing plant with a small pole that it will quickly outgrow.

At the same time, a slower growing plant may be more aesthetically pleasing on a smaller moss pole. 

Ask yourself (or do a quick google search) to help figure out how fast your plant grows.

Note: It’s also important to keep in mind the climate you’re currently in and the climate your plant is used to. 

If you live in a cooler zone, and your plant lives in a greenhouse, it’s likely to grow faster than the same plant in front of a drafty winter window. 

Maximum Plant Height 

How tall is your plant going to get? 

If you plan on keeping your plant short and bushy, you may choose a smaller moss pole. 

On the contrary, if your Monstera is destined to be the feature of your living room, you’ll be better off with a large moss pole.

1. Measure the height of your pot. 
2. Measure the height of your plant. 
3. Add the height of your plant to the height of your pot. 

Whatever number you end up with, add a few inches for growth.

Extra Large Plants 

For extra large plants, we may recommend having several moss poles to support new growth. 

Two or three moss poles supporting an extra large Monstera will provide plenty of space for aerial roots to dig in and collect stored nutrients.

Bending the Moss Pole

You may choose to bend your moss pole to follow new growth. 

This will help support the plant's natural growing pattern by simulating the vine-like environment found in nature.
